Best GBA Role-Playing Games (RPG)

For those of us who still own a GameBoy Advance, here are the best GBA role-playing games you probably never played. However, I highly doubt you haven’t played some of these if you are a die-hard Nintendo geek. Then, I suppose this list of top role-playing games for GameBoy Advance is for those looking to take a trip down memory lane or new gamers of the fold. By the way, the classic Gameboy Advance is available for a mere $25 on Amazon. Or, use one of these GBA emulators. So, get one and have a go at some of these timeless classic RPG games. They also made the list of all-time best GameBoy Advance games.

Pokemon Emerald/Ruby/Sapphire

Fans of the Pokemon franchise probably agree that Pokemon Emerald is one of the best Pokemon game ever made. Basically, Pokemon Emerald was a mash up of Pokemon Ruby and Pokemon Sapphire. However, just like the latter two, there were Pokemon only exclusive to the Emerald version. Furthermore, you needed all three games to complete your PokeDex.

Travel across the Hoenn Region! A vast land that contains many mysteries and challenges. You start out in Littleroot Town and eventually make your way to the Pokemon League. All three games are equally well-made and entertaining. Thus, they share the top spot for best role-playing games for GBA. Moreover, the games were so good that they remade them for the 3DS in the form of Pokemon Omega Ruby and Pokemon Alpa Sapphire.

Pokemon Fire Red/Leaf Green

Remakes of the original Pokemon Red and Pokemon Green, Leaf Green and Fire Red reimagines the Kanto region with all new graphics and features. I remember playing the originals on the Classic GameBoy back in the day and the remakes did not disappoint. Pokemon Fire Red and Pokemon Leaf Green follows the original story line and, once complete, you can trade 3rd generation Pokemon to the game. Start out in Pallet Town, explore new islands, and defeat the Elite 4.

Golden Sun Series: The Lost Age & Dark Dawn

Golden Sun: The Lost Age,  a 2002 role-playing video game for the Game Boy Advance, follows the story of Felix and his allies who are all skilled at alchemy. Their goal? To restore the power of alchemy to the world of Weyard. However, to do so, Felix and friends must travel, help out locals along the way and use their abilities to defeat enemies. The game is a follow-up to the first installment, Golden Sun, and, soon after the Lost Age, Golden Sun: Dark Dawn made its debut.

Final Fantasy VI Advance

Another classic RPG for GameBoy Advance, Final Fantasy VI, makes it on the list of top GBA RPG games. If you’re still caught up trying to perform link strikes in Final Fantasy XV, then try this game as a relaxer. The Empire has sent three Magitek Armor pilots, one of which is a mysterious girl with great powers, to an industrious town called Narshe.

The reason? There is a strange magical being located in the mine that could benefit the Empire. What they plan to do with it? You have to play to unlock the plot (or check out the videos below). Final Fantasy VI consists of four basic modes of gameplay: an overworld map, town and dungeon field maps, a battle screen, and a menu screen. Travel by foot, Chocobo or airship and defeat enemies with your magic or sword.

Breath of Fire II

Breath of Fire II, the sequel to Breath of Fire, consists of four modes of play: the world map, the field map, a menu screen, and a battle screen. There are several characters from which to choose and each has their own unique skills. Skills include skills to fish, hunt animals, bridge chasms, or swim across water. Depending on the party leader, the skills adjust accordingly and some characters only unlock after special missions. Enemies appear at random while you travel across the map.

Dragon Ball: Advanced Adventure

Dragon Ball: Advanced Adventure is a Game Boy Advance video game based on the Dragon Ball manga and anime series. With over 30 characters to play, you follow the original Dragon Ball storyline, on the hunt for dragon balls. There is a versus mode, where 2 players can compete against each other with most of the options available in One-on-One Mode. There are 3 main level designs:

• Platform levels- Goku/Krillin travels through an area and fights standard enemies.
• Nimbus levels- Goku/Krillin fights enemies in the air on the Nimbus Cloud.
• One-On-One levels- Where one character fights another character individually, like in the tournaments.

Fire Emblem

Fire Emblem is a turn-based, grid-system RPG for GBA. If you like thinking and making quick and effective decisions, then this a good game to play. With different abilities to master, lead a team of your choosing to victory. The player adopts the perspective of a tactician who is found by a girl named Lyn. Lyn discovers that she is the granddaughter of the Marquess of Caelin, Hausen. She recruits companions in a quest to prevent Lundgren, her great uncle, from ascending the Caelin throne.
