What is a full frame DSLR camera? Full Frame refers to digital cameras with an image sensor format which is the same size as 35mm format (36 mm × 24 mm) film. Full Frame DSLR cameras provide the best image quality and noise performance due to their larger sized sensor compared to APS-C format and APS-H. However, with a bigger sensor comes a larger and heavier camera body. Hence, in earlier days, Full Frame DSLR Cameras were super expensive. And, although they still are, you can get one like the Canon EOS 6D for under $1500.
Difference Between Full Frame Cameras and APS-C
For example, take the Canon EOS Rebel T6i and Canon EOS 5D Mark III. The EOS Rebel T6i has an APS-C sensor. However, the EOS 5D Mark III uses a Full Frame sensor. Additionally, we use a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM lens with both cameras. Here’s what happens:
Remember, the Rebel T6i has a crop factor of 1.6x. However, Full Frame cameras have no crop factor. Hence, lenses that fit the Rebel T6i allow you to get in up to 1.6x closer for a shot than the same lens used on the 5D Mark III. Moreover, a 50mm lens gives the same result as an 80mm lens on the Canon EOS 5D Mark III (50mm x 1.6 = 80mm). Refer to the illustration in our article on the APS-C Crop Factor.

Conclusion
To conclude, for clarity sake, check out the video below to understand h0w the different sensors work. What is the difference between Full Frame & Crop Sensor? Full Frame or Crop Sensor – which is better? What is the best sensor size? Both sensor sizes have benefits and potential ‘costs’ attached.
A full frame has less depth of field than a crop – so for blurry background portraits a Full Frame will be better, but for large depth of field maybe a crop sensor camera. However, that will have less resolution. Watch as Mike Brown explains the advantages and disadvantages of both to help you understand.
