Quick Fixes

  • Turn off Bluetooth (Settings > Bluetooth)
  • Disable Location Services (Settings > Privacy > Location Services)
  • Turn off Background App Refresh (Settings > General > Background App Refresh)
  • Disable iCloud (Settings > iCloud)
  • Delete or Disable Apps like Maps, Google Maps, Waze, etc. These apps drain your battery and heat up your iPhone.

How To Troubleshoot An iPhone That Gets Hot

In order to fix your iPhone’s overheating issue, you must first understand and identify the problem. For example, you may be running too many applications.

Furthermore, the use of multiple apps puts a strain on the iPhone’s CPU usage. Likewise, you may need the latest Apple update. When your iPhone gets extremely hot, you may get a temperature warning on your iPhone¹.

More often than not, an iPhone getting hot is linked to a software issue rather than a hardware problem. Unless, of course, you recently dropped your iPhone in water.

Again, this issue stems from application usage. You must identify the app or setting that affects your iPhone’s performance. Here’s what to do when your iPhone feels hot.

Close Applications

Firstly, you need to close all open applications on your iPhone. For those that do not know how to do so, follow the below steps to get started:

  • Double click your iPhone’s home button.
  • Then, a list of open apps appears.
  • Swipe each open app up toward the top of the screen to close it.

Likewise, once you close each of the apps, you want to restart your iPhone:

  • Press and hold the power button on your iPhone.
  • The “Slide To Power OFF” option appears at the top of the screen.
  • Swipe across the iPhone’s screen to turn it off.
  • After 30 seconds, hold the power button until the Apple logo appears.

Once you complete the above steps, use your iPhone as per normal to verify that your smartphone no longer overheats. Is your iPhone overheating after the fact? Then, continue with the tutorial.

Disable High CPU Usage Features

Features like Spotlight Search and Siri drain your iPhone’s battery and cause it to overheat at times. You want to turn these features especially if you do not use either.

Check For App Updates

Outdated software cause security problems as well as other bugs. Such things cause your iPhone to overheat. Hence, it’s a wise choice to always check for software updates.

  • Firstly, open the App Store.
  • Tap Updates (at the bottom of the screen).

Are there updates? If yes, tap the update all button to update your applications. Furthermore, you can check for an Apple software update in the Settings app. Simply go to Settings -> General -> Software Update.

Reset All Settings

Did you change a setting on your iPhone recently? Changed too many to figure out which one causes your battery to drain or overheat? Then, you can reset all your settings to default at once.

  • Firstly, open the Settings app.
  • Then, tap on General.
  • After, scroll to Reset -> Reset All Settings.

What happens when I use Reset All Settings? For starters, it does not erase any data from your iPhone. It simply resets WiFi, Wallpaper, and other settings to the factory default.

DFU Restore iPhone

The last resort. We discussed how to do this for the various different iPhones in different articles:

If you tried all the steps, and your iPhone gets hot, then contact Apple support or visit an Apple store and explain your problem. However, if your device is out of warranty you may try a different repair shop.

Why Is My Phone Getting So Hot?

Phones should not get hot when charging (certainly not hot enough to cause problems), and when this occurs, the reason can be either a damaged battery (and swapping these out on modern phones is a problem) or a poor quality charging cable. However, these days any charger or charger adaptor can charge your phone.

How Do You Cool Down Your iPhone?

If you need to cool down your iPhone, to resume use of your device as quickly as possible, turn it off, move it to a cooler environment, and allow it to cool down. However, do not put in the fridge. The following things will happen when your iPhone is in ‘cool down‘ mode:

  • The device stops charging.
  • The display dims or goes black.
  • Cellular radios will enter a low-power state. The signal may weaken during this time.
  • The camera flash is temporarily disabled.
